Bio Cranial Therapy
Bio Cranial Therapy, also referred to as The Bio Cranial System was discovered and developed in the 1970’s and 80’s by Robert Boyd, D.O., a U.K. Registered Osteopath. While based upon the discovery by Dr. William Garner Sutherland of the rhythmic Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM), the philosophical principles of Bio Cranial set this System apart from other cranial based disciplines.
A unique feature of Bio Cranial Therapy is the discovery by Dr. Boyd of a previously unknown level of weakness in the structure of practically everyone, going back to birth. The specific nature of this “weakness” provides the predisposition toward the development of a virtually unlimited range of disorders, dysfunctions, and illnesses. More importantly, the principle of Bio Cranial Therapy also incorporates the means of addressing these fundamental weaknesses.
The variety of disorders for which Bio Cranial has been found helpful include, but are not limited to, the following:
Structural Disorders: Sciatica, low back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain/restrictions, whiplash injury, rib subluxations and scoliosis.
Extremity Disorders: Sports injuries and overuse syndromes involving the knees, elbows and ankles, feet and hands.
Systemic Disorders: Migraine headaches, asthma, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, myofascial pain syndrome, colitis, tinnitus, arthritis, sleep apnea, anxiety and depression.
Children’s Disorders: Cerebral palsy, ADD, ADHD, earache.
Bio Cranial Therapy is not intended to treat any disorder or illness. It addresses the whole body with the intent to enhance health and bodily function.
How does Bio Cranial Therapy work?
Bio Cranial Therapy is based on the principle that the Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM) is the core mechanism at all levels of function (physiology). The PRM refers to the rhythmic movement of the skull and certain cranial structures which results in an increase and decrease in pressure. The therapy is directed to the correction of this mechanism, irrespective of the presence or absence of symptoms. The procedure utilizes the existing pressure changes within the head to bring about a very specific objective in the alignment of the cranial bones and the status of the dural membrane.
The dural membrane, also known as dura mater (“tough mother”), is a tough non-elastic membrane inside the head that is attached to the movable bones of the skull. It is this membrane that is the key to why changes in the head can affect the whole body.
The dura mater is actually the outer layer of the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves. Changes in tension on this membrane affect the tone of the nervous system and alter its function. One of the goals of Bio Cranial Therapy is to restore normal tone to this membrane which has reciprocal tension, because of it’s attachments in the skull and the sacrum (tailbone).
Picture a stringed instrument such as a guitar or violin. The strings are attached at both ends of the instrument. When the tension on the strings is just right, the instrument is in tune and can make beautiful music. The dura is similar in that altered tension causes the instrument,in this case it’s your nervous system, to go out of tune. Bio Cranial Therapy can be thought of as fine tuning your whole body.
How long does it take?
The procedure takes just minutes to accomplish.
What does a Bio Cranial correction feel like?
It feels like a a deep yet gentle stretch.
How soon will I notice a difference?
While everyone responds differently, and some conditions require additional time to respond, Everyone feels “different” after the first session. Since the focus is on releasing rather than controlling, the response is dependent on several factors, including the severity of the condition, length of time the condition, lifestyle choices, age, etc.
In general, conditions respond much more quickly to Bio Cranial Therapy than to other manual therapies, including chiropractic adjustments. As a result, fewer visits with less frequency are the norm.
